Research synthesis can be particularly useful for overcoming this challenge and providing the evidence needed. Qualitative studies can be very context specific making it difficult to draw inferences from them to guide practice. It is now being recognised that evidence-based knowledge is needed to support policy and practice development. ![]() Traditionally, nursing has been reluctant to accept that knowledge derived from patterns in larger populations is inherently better than meaningful understanding gained from smaller qualitative studies (Thorne 2009).
